Research interests lie in the areas of high performance concrete – fiber reinforcement, toughening mechanisms,
and durability of construction materials
• Research on high performance microfiber reinforced concrete at UC Berkeley. (10/1997-05/2002)
- Design and develop experimental procedures for small size fracture test to investigate failure mechanism of fiber-reinforced mortar
• Research on durability of concrete related to ASR at UC Berkeley. (03/2000-05/2002)
- Devise a method to investigate the mechanisms involved in alkali silica reaction in concrete
OCTA SR-22 HOV Improvement Project, Orange County, CA - Engineer responsible for the seismic analysis and design of the I-5/SR-22 Separation Widening, SR-22/Santiago Creek West Bound On Ramp Widening, SR-22/Santa Ana River Widening, and SB I-5/SR-57/SR-22 WB Connector. The widening and new bridges were designed to add one High Occupancy Vehicle Lane and one auxiliary lane in each direction and to improve entrance/exit ramps along the existing State Route 22 between SR57 to 405 Freeway.
Fairview Bridge over Santa Ana River, Santa Ana, CA - Engineer involved in seismic analysis and retrofit design of an existing reinforced concrete bridge. The structure, built in 1964, was found to be structurally deficient. Non-linear analyses of the existing and retrofitted bridge were performed to determine the structures capacity including the effects of soil-structure interaction.
LAX Southside Airfield Improvements, Los Angeles, CA - Engineer responsible for design for the strengthening of the Sepulveda tunnel under Runway 7R-25L and the new center Taxiway AC. This strengthening is required to accommodate the increased aircraft loads of the new Airbus A380. The tunnel will be strengthened in two phases, first adjacent to the existing Runway 7R-25L, and later between the two runways for the new center taxiway. The overall project is an FAA-sponsored effort to enhance safety and improve aircraft ground circulation and operations. The Sepulveda tunnel is in the Caltrans right-of-way. The tunnel strengthening plans were processed through Caltrans and the City of Los Angeles. The design was coordinated with general civil engineers for runway lighting, drainage and paving.
1st Street Bridge Widening, Los Angeles, CA - Engineer responsible for retrofit design of the existing superstructure to enable it to accommodate future light rail transit loads as well as the additional loads from the future widening structure. Analysis of the bridge was performed for each construction stage in order to determine accurate load demands on the existing structure.
Port of Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA - Engineer involved in the modeling and analysis of a reinforced concrete wharf structure. A 3D model was developed to determine the live load demands on the superstructure due to moving gantry cranes and containers.
Yerba Buena Island Temporary Bypass Structure, San Francisco Bay, CA - Engineer involved in the analysis and design for the preliminary engineering phase. Responsible for designing the steel double deck bridge connecting the skyway structure to Yerba Buena Island. The 15-span Bypass Structure was to detour 5 lanes of traffic each way during the construction of suspension section of new bridge.
OCTA Centerline Project, Orange County, CA - Engineer involved in the advance planning studies and type selection reports for a 9,800-foot long aerial structure on the OCTA Centerline project in Irvine. The effort involved the design of four new stations, 8 pedestrian bridges and seven major street crossings.
I-5 Far North Widening Project, Buena Park, CA - Engineer involved in the design and quantity calculations for the Phase I and II I-5 Far North project by OCTA. The project included the design for four undercrossing structures and the replacement of 3 overcrossing structures on the I-5 corridor between La Palma and Artesia Boulevard. In addition, the project included a stormwater pumping plant, and a number of unique architectural / structural enhancements on the overcrossings due to their significance of being located at the northern boundary of Orange County on the I-5 corridor.
210/I-215 Interchange, San Bernardino County, CA - Engineer involved in the analysis and design for the Cajon/East-South Connector. The East-South Connector is an approximately 445m long and 13m wide prestressed curved bridge. It crosses over Cajon Boulevard, 4 Railroad tracks, and the 27th Street offramp. The design included provisions for specific fault rupture criteria which imposed much more stringent seismic design parameters than Caltran’s SDC.
Glendale Hyperion Viaduct Vulnerability Study, Los Angeles, CA - Eengineer responsible for Independent Check of the seismic modeling and analysis of a 75 year old multi-span reinforced concrete viaduct. The bridge consists of 2 open-spandrel arch spans, 12 reinforced concrete filled-spandrel arch barrel spans and 6 abutments. The curved and elevated roadway alignment of the existing structure was accurately modeled in 3D using Sap2000.
