병원체 감염에 대항하여 우리 몸은 다양한 방어 수단들 동원한다. 일차적으로 피부와 소화액 같은 물리/화학적 방어막이 작동하고 병원체가 이를 통과하여 체내로 감염되면 선천면역 기능이 가동되어 즉각적으로 병원체를 제거한다. 만약 선천면역시스템이 즉각적인 병원체 제거에 실패한다면 적응면역시스템이 작동되어 최종적으로 병원체를 제거하고 병원체가 가진 정보를 기억하여 동일한 병원체가 재감염될 때 보다 신속하고 강력한 면역반응을 이끈다. 그러나 우리의 면역시스템과 함께 진화하고 있는 병원체들도 우리의 면역기능을 회피할 방법들을 진화시켜오고 있기 때문에 감염에 대처하는 우리의 면역시스템은 언제나 만만찮은 적들과 대처하고 있고 적재적소에서 최적의 반응을 하지 않는다면 우리의 건강은 심각한 위협을 받는다.

면역계는 외부의 항원뿐만 아니라 우리 자신의 항원에 대해서도 공격을 감행할 수 있는데 바람직하게는 암세포를 발견하여 제거하는 immune surveillance 기능을 수행하지만 바람직하지 않게는 각종 자가 면역질환을 야기할 수도 있다.

 

우리 연구실은 면역계의 여러 기능 중 선천면역과 적응면역을 중개/조절하는 NKT세포에 대한 연구를 수행중이며 이와 더불어 개인별 HLA에 특화된 항암면역 T세포를 선택적으로 체외증식하는 기술과 이 과정에서 기억T세포로 전환시키는 기술들을 개발하여 환자 맞춤형 항암면역 T 세포치료제를 개발하고 있다. 또한 바이러스가 감염된 세포에서 바이러스가 방출되는 과정을 억제하는 BST2 단백질 기능 연구를 통해 바이러스 백신 및 치료용 항체를 고효율로 생산하는 기술을 개발 중이며 면역학 뿐만 아니라 현대 생명과학 연구에 필수적인 유전자 변형 동물을 제작하는 기술을 확보하여 연구에 활용하고 있다. 이러한 연구성과를 실험실 수준에서 사장시키지 않기 위해 고려대학교 기술지주회사의 자회사로 바이오벤처를 실험실 창업 하여 기초연구성과를 바이오신약 개발로 확산시키기 위한 노력을 하고 있다.
