    분자신호시스템 생물학 연구실에서는 세포 신호 전달 회로 및 이들의 유전체 발현 네트워크 조절 기작에 대한 근본적인 이해를 추구합니다 . 이를 위해 생물정보학적 , 분자생물학적 , 세포생물학적 , 생화학 및 유전학적 접근법을 통합한 다차원적 복합연구체계를 확립하였고, 일차적으로 식물을 모델 유기체로 하여 환경 신호에 의한 발현 유전체의 재편에 관한 분자 생화학적 기작을 규명하고 있습니다. 본 연구실은 하버드 의과대학의 Jen Sheen 교수 연구팀과 국제공동과제를 수주하여 연구를 수행하고 있으며 , 덴마크 코펜하겐 대학의 Tom Nielsen 교수, 뉴질랜드 PFR 연구소의 Don Hunter 박사, 중국 상하이 식물스트레스 연구센터의 Yan Xiong 교수와의 공동연구를 수행하고 있습니다.
     
     Welcome to the Laboratory of Sang-Dong Yoo in the Department of Life Sciences at the Korea University. The primary
    interest of the laboratory is in fundamental understanding of cell signaling circuits and gene regulatory networks underlying physiological and biochemical processes involved in plant growth and development under growth limiting conditions. With the genomic and proteomic information available in various plant species including Arabidopsis and rice, we have established and utilized an integrated approach that combines computational, molecular, cellular, biochemical and genetic tools together to elucidate core circuitry constituents and their regulatory mechanisms in cell signaling pathways at a systems level. Our research outcomes are readily applicable to improve plant performance via “ The innovation of Species ”.

    Integrative Studies on Regulatory Mechanisms of a Cellular Energy Sensor SnRK1 in Plant Growth and Senescence :
     
    Snf1-related protein kinase1 (SnRK1) is an evolutionarily conserved cellular energy sensor detecting sugar starvation/energy depletion signaling that affects plant growth and senescence. However, details in regulatory molecular mechanisms underlying the physiological processes remain unclear. Here, we attempt to understand SnRK1 protein behaviors and functions with respect to molecular responses and their mechanisms for plant adaptation to stresses (flooding/drought) that cause sugar/energy deprivation in plant cells. This research outcome will provide insights in engineering principles of plant smart genomes for improving stress resistance.
     
     
    Integrative Research on the Plant Hormone Ethylene Signaling :
     
    The plant hormone ethylene, that modulates endogenous developmental signals, mediates environmental stimuli to regulate plant growth and development. The ethylene signal transduction pathway has been extensively studied using molecular and genetic approaches and several key signaling components have been found. The long term goal of this project is to understand the molecular mechanistic basis of the ethylene signaling pathway in plants. The immediate goal is focusing on elucidation of additional signaling components and unraveling molecular mechanisms connecting the perceived hormone signal at the receptor complexes to the key transcription factor EIN3 in early ethylene responsive gene expression.
     
     
    Analysis of MAPK Cascade Signaling Network involved in Plant Stress Adaptation :
     
    MAPKinase(MAPK) cascade signaling plays a central role for the intracellular signal transduction network. Especially, the function of plant MPAK cascade (MAPKKK- MAPKK-MAPK) signaling is most likely expanded over the evolutionary time when considered the amplified genome constituents. In this research, we elucidate the MAPK cascade signaling network involved in abiotic stress adaptation in Arabidopsis as a model plant and also in rice and maize as important food resources. This information will assist to improve crop abiotic stress resistance.
     
     
    Chloroplast Energy Biology :
     
    FLIM for chlorophyll fluorescence lifetimes at single cell resolution is a novel approach to measure photochemical reactions in higher plants. We are currently investigating how chloroplast structure supports high efficient photosynthesis in plants using FLIM as well as conventional approaches. This information allows us to look into designing a photosynthetic apparatus with higher efficiency which would be even better than what evolution has done after the very first symbiosis between chloroplast-origin prokaryote and host eukaryote cells.
     
     
    Synthetic Biology in Autophagy Signaling  :
     
    We are currently embracing a new move in life science. A combination of Gibsson assembly and CRISPR-CAS9 technique will provide a tool to drive a new synthetic genome to understand the running principles of current genome, for which analysis is facilitated by quantitatively monitoring its activity using a bench-top NGS platform. We will first attempt to disentangle signaling mechanisms underlying autophagy that is conserved in microbes, animals and plants.
