     Inflammation, 염증 반응은 인체가 감염이나 과식과 같은 다양한 자극과 스트레스에 대응하는 수단이다. 따라서 염증반응은 수 많은 질환들과 밀접하게 연관되어 있으며, 질병을 컨트롤할 수 있는 가장 강력한 반응 중 하나이다. 반면 염증이 종료되지 않고 만성적으로 지속될 경우 염증이 오히려 질병을 진행시키게 되며, 그 예로서 cancer와 염증성 알러지질환인 천식이 알려져 있다.

     이러한 염증을 조절한다는 것은 우리 몸의 homeostasis에 기여하는 대단히 중요한 일이기 때문에, 다양한 인자들이 염증 조절에 관여하고 있다. 본 연구실인 “염증신호전달 및 질환제어 연구실”에서는 이러한 염증을 조절하는 신호전달물질 중 lipid mediator 신호전달체계에 초점을 맞추어 연구를 진행하고 있다. 

     염증을 조절하는 lipid mediator의 하나인 eicosanoids는 cPLA2 효소에 의해 생성되며, 그 중에서도 특히 leukotriene B4는 염증반응을 진행시키는 것으로 알려져 있다. Leukotriene B4의 receptor로서 다양한 cell type의 세포막에 존재하는 GPCR(G-protein coupled receptor)인 BLT2가 존재하는데, 이러한 leukotriene B4와 BLT2의 결합은 세포의 염증성 변화(ROS생성, migration, growth, adhesion, angiogenesis)를 증가시켜 다양한 염증반응과 암, 동맥경화, 천식 등의 질병을 유도한다.

     본 연구실에서는 이러한 BLT2 그 자체의 기능을 규명하는 연구와 더불어, BLT2가 포함된 GPCR family는 약물의 타깃으로서 major하게 지목되고 있는 만큼 암, 천식 치료 약물로서의 개발 가능성을 본 실험실의 주도로 다양한 협동연구를 통하여 진행중에 있다.
