    신경 과학은 생명체의 중앙조절장치인 신경계의 구조와 작용을 연구하는 학문입니다. 우리의 뇌는 약 천억개 신경세포들의 집합체이며, 이 많은 세포들이 또 서로 수많은 접촉을 통해 상호간 신호를 전달하는 것이 우리 두뇌활동의 기본이 되는 메카니즘입니다. 신경세포간의 연결부분을 시냅스라 부르는데 이 시냅스에서의 신호전달의 효율(efficacy of synaptic transmission or synaptic weight)은 강해지거나 약해질 수 있고 이를 시냅스 가소성(Synaptic plasticity) 이라고 합니다. 우리 두뇌가 정보를 받아들여 이를 해석, 이해하고(학습) 이를 다시 저장(기억)하는 활동이 우리 생명활동의 핵심이라 할 수 있는데, 이 학습과 기억현상의 기초가 되는 메카니즘이 시냅스 가소성인 것으로 믿고 있습니다.


    저희 연구실에서는 시냅스 가소성의 분자세포생물학적 규명과 그 현상이 두뇌의 어떤 부분에서 역할을 하여 궁극적으로 어떤 행동에 영향을 미치는가 하는 행동학적인 연구를 병행하고 있습니다. 특히 Approach와 avoidance에 중요한 역할을 하는 것으로 알려진 선조체 (Striatum)에서의 가소성에 비중을 두고 연구를 진행하고 있습니다. 이에 따라 1) 의사결정 (Decision making)에서의 선조체 가소성 (Striatum Plasticity)이 갖는 역할에 대하여 연구를 진행하고 있으며, 2) 감정 반응 (Emotional Response)에서의 선조체 가소성의 역할을 우울증(Depression), 불안감(Anxiety), 스트레스(Stress) 등의 행동학적 실험 등을 통하여 연구를 진행하고 있습니다.

    Ⅰ. 선조체 내에서의 구조적 가소성

    •  -뇌질환 마우스 모델에서 선조체 내에서의 중형 돌기 신경세포(medium spiny neuron, MSN)의 구조적 가소성 연구
    •  -유전자 가위(CRISPR-Cas9)를 통한 MSN 세포 특이적 유전자 발현 조절로 구조 가소성 기작 연구

     

    Ⅱ. 감정 반응에서의 선조체 가소성의 역할

    •  -유전자변형 마우스를 사용한 불안 및 스트레스 상황에서 선조체부분에서의 글루타메이트성 시냅스의 변화 및 역할에 대해 연구
    •  -선조체와 편도체(amygdala)의 신경회로 특이적 활성이 불안반응에 미치는 영향 연구(Optogenetics, DREADD)
    •  -우울증에 영향을 미치는 후생유전적 메커니즘을 행동적, 분자적으로 연구 및 우울증 모델을 사용한 우울증과 스트레스의 연관성 연구
    •  -수면 및 식이조절 신경펩티드로 먼저 알려진 오렉신(orexin)이 스트레스 상황에서 HPA axis와의 상관관계 및 역할 규명에 대한 연구
