    Welcome to Systems Bioengineering and Synthetic Metabolic Engineering Lab!

     

     

    In the year 2004, Systems Bioengineering Laboratory was established by Professor Min-kyu Oh of Chemical and Biological Engineering Department, Korea University. The main research facilities are currently located at New Engineering Building. The major research topics of our lab includes metabolic engineering, synthetic biology and also systems bioengineering.

    Research Topic

    Systems Bioengineering
    Advent of genome era has allowed systems biology approaches in understanding and engineering living organisms, such as transcriptomics, metabolomics, and fluxomics. In addition, synthetic biology has provided novel biological components or modules to build genetic circuits inside them. Those new technologies are invaluable scientific progresses in early 21st century. In our lab, we are trying to utilize systems biology approaches to understand phenotypes of industrial strains. Also we are trying to create novel synthetic biology tools and integrate the tools into metabolically engineered microorganisms to optimize their functions, such as productivity and tolerance.

     

     

    Synthetic Metabolic Engineering

    The limited supply of petroleum and the accumulation of greenhouse gas request the production of fuels and chemicals from biomass, of which the process is called biorefinery. One of the important steps of the biorefinery process is the strain development for efficient conversion of biomass sugars to chemical intermediates. In order to construct the desirable strains that can produce industrially valuable products, our laboratory is equipped with genetic manipulation tools for many industrial strains, including Escherichia coli, Enterobacter aerogenes, Klebsiella pneumonia, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. We are developing new gene cloning, knock-out, genome editing tools and applying those techniques for achieving maximal effectiveness of the biorefinery processes.
